About us

The beginning

Saskia Griep and Freek ten Broeke are the founders of the sustainable travel organization Better Places. They have traveled their entire lives with passion and curiosity about people, nature, and culture. But the more they saw of the world, the clearer it became: if we want to keep traveling, something needs to change.

In 2022, Better Places commissioned the Impact Institute to investigate the true cost of an airline ticket for people, nature, and climate. The calculation showed that current ticket prices only cover a portion of the actual costs, with the rest being paid by the planet and future generations. This outcome served as the starting point for the Future Friendly Fund: a way to use money to transition to a sustainable travel world.

Better Places has been investing in the energy transition and sustainable innovations for years. However, it felt more appropriate to separate these amounts from business operations. Therefore, Saskia and Freek decided to establish an independent foundation with ANBI status. This way, the fund is completely transparent, non-profit, and every euro goes directly to sustainable projects.

Climate justice

The climate crisis does not affect everyone equally. The wealthiest group of people causes by far the most emissions, while the poorest half of the world’s population bears the heaviest consequences.

The Future Friendly Fund therefore chooses climate justice.
We want the resources to go to initiatives that bring real change in technology, behavior, and awareness.

Why this works

  • Conscious travel: knowing the real price leads to different choices.
  • Targeted investments: money goes to projects with measurable impact.
  • Fair distribution: communities benefit from tourism.

This is how we build, step by step, a future where travel enriches the world rather than burdens it.
